Why Functional Medicine?

The Way Of The Future

"The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will instruct his patient in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease." -Thomas Edison

Functional medicine has been a long time coming! While conventional medicine certainly has a place, functional medicine is better suited for chronic conditions and getting to the root of the cause, not just masking it.

The National Institutes of Health defines conventional medicine as “A system in which medical doctors and other healthcare professionals treat symptoms and diseases using drugs, radiation, or surgery.” The key point is symptom treatment.

Functional medicine approaches healthcare more holistically by examining every factor involved including, symptoms, genes, environment, and lifestyle to treat the causes of disease, not just the symptoms.

According to the Institute for Functional Medicine, functional medicine was developed based on the understanding of “the importance of an individualized approach to disease causes based on the evolving research in nutritional science, genomics, and epigenetics.”

Acute Vs. Chronic

Conventional medicine is best suited for acute illnesses. Acute illness is characterized by what can be thought of as symptom-based care. It has developed over the years to hyper focus all of it's attention on individual signs and symptoms rather than DIG for cause. Worse yet, the culture of conventional medicine tends to treat the "disease" rather than the patient standing in front of them! Traditional medicine has at it's core a very "organo-centric" rather than holistic view of the body. In other words, they believe that organs work in isolation to each other and have developed medical specialties to look pathologically pigeon-holed at their particular area or expertise of the body without acknowledging how everything relates or is connected.

Examples of acute conditions include:

-Asthma attack
-Broken bone
-Bronchitis
-Burns
-Heart Attack
-Pancreatitis

Functional medicine, on the other hand, is better suited for lifestyle and chronic conditions such as: heart disease, diabetes, autoimmunity, weight challenges, anxiety, depression, and even cancers!
